Renton Coil Spring Company began producing quality coil springs, wire forms, assemblies and flat metal parts in
1949. The company was founded by Burwell "Ray" Pepka who had previously co-owned a spring company in
Indiana. In 1949, he left Indiana and moved to the Seattle area to start up his own spring company.
Renton Coil Spring Co. started business on Factory Street in Renton, Washington. This location was just a few blocks
away from Pacific Car and Foundry and the Boeing Company. Since Renton Coil Spring Co. was able to supply these
customers with high quality springs, they grew quickly from a four-person shop to a twenty-person shop. In 1965
Renton Coil Spring moved to its third location at 325 Burnett Avenue North, which was the company's home for 24
years.
Chuck Pepka purchased the business from his family, after Ray Pepka's death in 1992. Under Chuck's leadership,
the company has continued to grow from approximately 35 employees to it's present size of 65 employees. Since July
of 1993, the company has seen sales increase about 400%. In March of 1999, RCS moved to it's new 46,000 sq. ft
facility at 425 South 7th Ave. in Renton. The new site is less than 2 miles from the old site. This proximity has
allowed the company to retain existing employees and accomplish the move with minimal disruption to production
schedules. This year will mark Renton Coil Spring's 50th Anniversary.
At Renton Coil Spring Co. the technology has progressed from slide rules, to calculators, to mainframe computers,
and now to PC's. Materials have changed from high carbon steel and stainless to titanium and high temperature super-alloys.
The company focus remains to provide the highest quality parts, complete technical support, and on-time performance
at a competitive price. RCS became accredited to ISO 9001 in June of 1998. This implementation of this project
spanned nearly a year of effort from the employees and management. This major accomplishment formalizes their quality
procedures and positions them to do even more work outside the US. New equipment has been put to work to expand
their capability and capacity. RCS is continuing to look for and acquire new equipment. |
